If you’re unsure whether your pet’s condition is an emergency, err on the side of caution and call. The following are signs that your pet needs immediate veterinary attention:

• Difficulty breathing, choking, or persistent coughing that does not resolve on its own
• Collapse, sudden inability to stand, or uncontrolled seizures
• Suspected ingestion of a toxic substance, medication, or foreign object
• Severe or uncontrolled bleeding from a wound or injury
• Inability to urinate, particularly in male cats—this is a life-threatening emergency that can progress rapidly
• Pale, white, blue, or gray gums, which can indicate shock or severe blood loss
• Significant swelling of the abdomen, especially if accompanied by unproductive retching or distress
• Trauma from being struck by a vehicle, a fall, or a serious bite wound—even if your pet appears to be moving normally
• Loss of consciousness or extreme, sudden weakness
